Bruno Fernandes, a star for Manchester United, has responded to criticism of his on-field behavior from people like Roy Keane and Gary Neville, past club leaders.
The body language Fernandes displayed during United's 7-0 thrashing by Liverpool last month was described by Keane as "nothing short of disgraceful," while Neville called the number eight "embarrassing at times" and added, "That wasn't a captain's performance from a Manchester United player and I am sure Erik ten Hag will deal with that."
Fernandes defended his actions, saying they were motivated by his desire to triumph and the potential anger he may feel if he didn't.
"I recognize that I sometimes cross the line, definitely. Yet, as I previously stated, it can happen throughout a game, and it might be challenging to maintain emotional control.
I clearly never aim to treat anyone disrespectfully. As I previously stated, everyone is competitive and wants to succeed, but I genuinely believe that the way I play, the way I experience the game, and the fervor with which I approach it are the ways in which I feel better and are best able to provide to my team and club. I play that way because of this, and I have done so since I was seven years old.
"I want to win every game. Because I'm so competitive, I always try to push myself to give my best effort while also encouraging others to do the same. If I ask someone for something or approach someone on the field for advice, it's because I think they can do it better than they are currently doing.
Fernandes even implied that it is a pundit's right to emphasize the drawbacks.
"I can't control that, but I kind of understand what's going on underneath that. We all understand that the pundits must comment," he continued.
"They must put out their best effort because often the worse things they say, the more work they receive. We simply have to accept that, but for me, it's more important that my colleagues are content and unaffected by it. I prefer it when they let me know when they're not, since that helps me to relax.
