In honor of this year's International Day of the Family, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) advised parents and guardians to teach their kids how to utilize technology so they can avoid its drawbacks.

Lariba Zuweira, the sector minister, said that technology has integrated itself into people's and families' daily lives over the years. "Our smartphones, our computers, and even our home appliances have all been built to fit our busy daily schedules and to function effectively," she stated.

The minister's deputy, Francisca Oteng-Mensah, read the speech in her place.

Every year on May 15, the UN-instituted day is observed to raise awareness of issues pertaining to families as well as a better understanding of the social, demographic, and economic forces that impact families.

The event this year has "Families and New Technologies" as its subject.

As part of the events, ministry employees led a health walk around Teshie in Accra with locals and schoolchildren to raise awareness of the value of family life.

Significance

In the minister's words, "from our smartphones to our computers and even our home appliances, all have been built to fit into our busy daily schedules and to function effectively." Technology has become a vital element of people's and families' everyday lives throughout the years.

Despite the many benefits of technology, he claimed that it was important to comprehend both its benefits and drawbacks.  It also clarifies its function inside families in order to lessen issues like trafficking, kidnapping, and murder, among others.

She said that the family, as a social institution, had helped society flourish via kinship, the formation of networks, and marriages.

The family, according to Ms. Zuwera, is the foundation of all social activity and ensures the survival of society by educating and assimilating new members.

She went on to say that this was the reason it was crucial to raise awareness of new digital technologies and take appropriate action to address their influence on family well-being.

Rev. Dr. Comfort Asare, the Director of the Department of Social Welfare, underlined the importance and function of families, noting that "the strength of a typical Ghanaian family can be likened to a tree."

Such events, according to her, would be used to support good parenting, promote the rights and protection of children, and strengthen family ties.

The director said, "Families must stay together to ensure their survival and wellbeing."

Young Joo Lee, a UNICEF child protection specialist, stated that all parties involved must commit to upholding their obligations to safeguard children and families.

Despite the fact that the Internet provides kids with fantastic opportunities for communication, information access, and entertainment, she claimed, there is a need to raise awareness of cyber security and online protection, including enhancing institutional capacity to look into and address cases of online child sex abuse.
