The World Federation of Consuls, Internationale des Corps et Associations Consulaires (FICAC), presented President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with the highest distinction in world diplomatic circles at a ceremony on May 30, 2023, at the Jubilee House in Accra.

In appreciation of his outstanding services to peace, democracy, stability, and freedoms, as well as his crucial support for the Honorary Consuls in Ghana, President Akufo-Addo received the FICAC Gold Star award.

The FICAC Gold Star award, which is given only to in-office Heads of State and is recognised by royal decree in Belgium, is hailed by FICAC President Nikolaos K. Margaropoulos as the most distinguished honour conferred by the World Consular Federation.

Additionally, it has received special status recognition from the European Union, the Organisation of American States, and the United States ECOSOG.

President Akufo-Addo has joined an exclusive company of international leaders by obtaining this prestigious honour, which also includes Herman Van Rompuy, a former president of the European Council; Prince Albert II of Monaco; and the presidents of Cyprus, Slovenia, the Philippines, and Turkey.

Notably, Popes Benedict and Francis have both received this honour, which they usually reject from authorities or organisations but accepted and gave private audiences in exchange for.

After accepting the honour, President Akufo-Addo expressed his appreciation for the recognition and thanked everyone in attendance for picking Accra as the premier location for the Pan-African summit.

He emphasised the value of the work done by consulates in Ghana and other countries, emphasising their critical role in bridging gaps where official diplomatic presence may be lacking.

The President praised the Ghanaian Consular Corps for their proactive and fruitful involvement, emphasising in particular their work with the Women in Diplomacy committee. He expressed his sincere gratitude for the award and promised to keep assisting the Consular Corps in fostering good ties between Ghana and their individual countries of accreditation.

In order to promote knowledge sharing, coordination, and effectiveness in enhancing the role of consuls, the oldest institution supporting international bilateral relations, FICAC, was founded in Copenhagen in October 1982.

By receiving the FICAC Gold Star award, President Akufo-Addo has demonstrated his extraordinary dedication to promoting international relations, promoting peace and democracy, and furthering Ghana's reputation as a diplomatic powerhouse.
