Mark Halsey, a former Premier League referee, thinks harsher penalties are necessary to put an end to managers' abuse of match officials.
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has called for harsher penalties as a result of Jose Mourinho's actions and the subsequent abuse of Anthony Taylor by Roma supporters.
Following Roma's loss to Sevilla in the Europa League final, Taylor and his family became the targets of verbal and physical abuse at the Budapest airport.
Taylor made various judgments during the game that both teams disagreed with, but Mourinho was particularly irate and was captured on camera cursing at the referee after the game had ended.
Halsey was furious at what he noticed.
According to Halsey, who spoke to Stats Perform, "everyone who has seen the footage or watched the game, I thought both teams' conduct with their players and the coaching staff was appalling."
"I think Anthony [Taylor] and his crew played exceptionally well that night despite the most trying circumstances. The referee has a really difficult time when the players won't listen.
"The referee is limited to judging what is in front of him. If I was being overly harsh, they might have done better to have benched team officials. Having said that, I still believed they were amazing that evening.
"Of course, the criticism of him in the parking lot when [Mourinho] volleyed abuse again, I believe it's awful, and after Roma supporters saw it, I think that's what contributed to the scenes we saw at the airport. Even though Jose Mourinho is incredibly popular, you cannot do that. You can't support these behaviors.
In the cold light of day, when he sits back down and examines himself and his family examines the way he behaves, I believe they will believe that he deserves all of the consequences that are being meted out to him.
Halsey now wants regulatory authorities like UEFA to take action against the abuse by applying point deductions.
