In the first nine months of 2023, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reported an increase in its losses. During this period, the power distribution company recorded a total of GH¢2,050,373,143.47 in collection losses.
This update was provided by the Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, during a briefing on the country's power situation in Accra on Thursday, November 8, at the Information Ministry.
Collection losses refer to the income that is not received due to reasons such as non-payment, delinquency, or bad debt from customers.
In contrast, this amount is higher compared to the total loss of GH¢2,448,770,084.34 that the company recorded in 2022.With regard to system losses, Dr Prempeh stated that the ECG reported a total loss of GH¢4,038,241,812.63 as of September 2023, in contrast to the GH¢2,599,695,242.10 recorded in 2022.
The company also reported technical losses of GH¢1,279,369,021.42 as of September 2023, which is a decrease from the GH¢2,758,872,792.21 reported in 2022.
