The struggles and failures of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, in various competitions can be attributed to several factors, including:

1. Inconsistent Management and Coaching:

Frequent changes in coaches often lead to inconsistent strategies and tactics. This lack of continuity makes it difficult for the team to develop a coherent style of play.

Sometimes, coaches are not given enough time to build a team culture or implement their vision, leading to instability.

2. Player Selection Issues:

Ghana has faced criticism for issues related to player selection, including favoritism, lack of transparency, and ignoring in-form players.

There are sometimes concerns about calling up players based on connections rather than performance and merit, which affects team cohesion and morale.

3. Team Cohesion and Unity:

Reports of divisions within the squad have surfaced during various tournaments, affecting on-field performances. Differences between senior players and younger players can create a lack of harmony in the squad.

These internal issues sometimes result in players not giving their best efforts or failing to perform as a cohesive unit during crucial matches.

4. Poor Preparation and Infrastructure:

Inadequate training facilities and preparations have been highlighted as challenges for the team.

While some African teams have improved their infrastructure, Ghana has sometimes lagged in providing the necessary support for optimal training and match readiness.

5. Pressure and Expectations:

The Black Stars face immense pressure from fans and media, with high expectations due to their past successes and talented players. This pressure can be overwhelming, particularly during major tournaments like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the World Cup.

Handling the psychological aspect of the game has been a challenge in key moments, often leading to disappointing outcomes.

6. Financial and Administrative Challenges:

Disputes over bonuses and payments have been a recurring issue for the Black Stars. In some tournaments, such as the 2014 World Cup, disputes over financial matters led to distractions within the squad.

Governance issues within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have also affected the planning, execution, and overall support for the national team.

7. Tactical Limitations:

The team has sometimes struggled with adapting tactics during matches, especially against well-prepared and highly tactical opponents.

Some losses can be attributed to defensive lapses, failure to maintain leads, or being outplayed in the midfield by more organized teams.

8. Underdevelopment of Youth Talent:

Although Ghana has a rich history of youth development, recent years have seen a decline in nurturing young players effectively.

Many talented young players leave the country early to pursue careers abroad, which sometimes hinders their integration into the national team setup at a later stage.

9. Injuries and Fitness Issues:

Key injuries to important players have sometimes weakened the team during crucial games and tournaments.

The physical conditioning of players, especially when competing against stronger or faster teams, has also been a point of concern in certain tournaments.

10. Tough Competition:

African football has become highly competitive, with other nations improving their structures, talent pools, and resources.

This means the Black Stars often face tough opposition from countries that have invested heavily in their football programs, making it harder to dominate as in previous decades.

These factors, individually or combined, have contributed to the struggles and underperformance of the Black Stars in recent years. Addressing these issues could help them reclaim their position as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
