Roman Fada Ready to Lead Ghana Freedom Party Following Akua Donkor’s Passing
Following the recent passing of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) founder Akua Donkor, her running mate and vice-presidential candidate, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, has expressed readiness to step into the role of GFP's presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 election. Roman Fada shared his intentions in a radio interview on Accra’s Angel FM, stating he is prepared to lead the party if the GFP requires it and if the law confirms him as the new flag bearer.
Roman Fada emphasized his commitment to continuing Donkor's legacy and moving the GFP’s vision forward. Known for his background in entertainment, he hopes to draw support from his colleagues in the entertainment industry, which he believes will add a unique perspective to his campaign. “If the law says I should be the flag bearer, why not? I am ready to take up the mantle,” he affirmed.
The circumstances surrounding Akua Donkor’s death were described by Roman Fada, who explained that she had initially been admitted to the Nsawam Government Hospital on October 26, 2024. After her health briefly improved, she was discharged, only to be rushed to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (formerly Ridge Hospital) the following day when her condition worsened. She ultimately passed away on October 28 at around 10 p.m., surrounded by family members. In response, the Ghana Freedom Party is preparing an official statement about her passing and the party’s next steps.
Akua Donkor founded the Ghana Freedom Party in 2011, later registering it in 2012. She initially entered public service as an elected Assembly member for the Hemang Electoral Area in the Kwabre East District. Determined to bring change, she attempted to expand her political reach by running for Member of Parliament in Kwabre East, Ashanti Region, although her bids in the 2004 and 2008 elections were unsuccessful.
Unwavering in her ambition, Donkor set her sights on the presidency, and in 2011, she established the GFP with the goal of providing an alternative voice in Ghana’s political landscape. She had recently filed her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election and was actively involved in preparations, attending all Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings.
Roman Fada’s potential candidacy comes at a pivotal moment for the Ghana Freedom Party, as supporters look to him for continuity. His background in the entertainment industry may bring fresh appeal, yet he faces the challenge of stepping into the void left by Akua Donkor’s determined leadership. If confirmed as the new flag bearer, Roman Fada’s bid for the presidency would mark a new chapter for the GFP, as it seeks to honor Donkor’s legacy while navigating Ghana's 2024 electoral landscape.
