Bawumia Asked for My Sacred Prayer Shawl – Adom Kyei Duah
Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei Duah, leader of the Philadelphia Movement, has recently drawn attention for revealing a private interaction with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. In a video addressing the controversy, the prophet shared the circumstances under which he covered Bawumia with his sacred prayer shawl—a move that has since sparked heated criticism.
According to Prophet Adom Kyei Duah, the vice president, who is also the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate, specifically requested to be covered with the sacred shawl. He clarified that it was not a decision he made on his own. “As a mere man of God, I had no option but to comply with his request,” the prophet explained, adding that he acted out of respect for Bawumia’s position and wishes.
The gesture has ignited a storm of backlash, with many accusing Prophet Adom Kyei Duah of favoritism. Critics argue that he failed to show the same level of regard to former President John Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The prophet, however, maintains that the incident was not politically motivated and that his actions were merely a response to Bawumia’s direct request.
The sacred prayer shawl, a revered symbol within the Philadelphia Movement, is seen as a mark of divine favor and blessing. Covering someone with it is considered a significant spiritual act, which is why the gesture toward Bawumia has drawn intense scrutiny. Many NDC supporters have questioned why the prophet refrained from extending a similar honor to Mahama, leading to allegations of partiality and bias.
In addressing these concerns, Prophet Adom Kyei Duah emphasized that his role as a man of God is to serve everyone equally, regardless of their political affiliations. He insisted that the incident should not be misconstrued as an endorsement of any political candidate or party.
The controversy highlights the intersections of religion and politics in Ghana, where faith leaders often wield significant influence. While some supporters of Bawumia see the act as a divine affirmation of his leadership, others view it as inappropriate for a religious figure to appear aligned with a political figure in such a public manner. Prophet Adom Kyei Duah’s clarification has done little to quiet the debate, as the gesture continues to fuel discussions on the role of clergy in political matters.
