James Gyakye Quayson Wins Assin North Seat Again in 2024
James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained his position as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. Quayson secured a decisive victory by polling 18,023 votes, which accounted for 56.35% of the total ballots cast. His closest competitor, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 13,599 votes, representing 42.52%. This win further cements Quayson’s influence in the Assin North constituency, highlighting his ability to maintain support despite ongoing political and legal battles. His triumph reinforces the NDC's position as a strong force in the region.
Quayson’s political journey has been anything but smooth. His initial election in 2020 was marred by controversy due to issues surrounding his dual citizenship with Canada, which the Supreme Court ruled as a violation of Article 94(2)(a) of Ghana’s Constitution. This led to the annulment of his election victory. However, his determination and popularity among the constituents remained evident as he made a strong comeback. In a by-election held on June 27, 2023, Quayson once again emerged victorious and was sworn into office on July 4, 2023. This victory showcased his resilience and the unwavering confidence his supporters have in his leadership, despite efforts by the NPP to challenge his position.
The landslide win in the 2024 elections not only secures Quayson’s seat but also highlights his political tenacity and the loyalty of his constituents. It signals the NDC's growing momentum in reclaiming parliamentary seats and strengthening its influence nationwide. While the NPP's efforts to unseat Quayson fell short, his victory serves as a testament to his enduring popularity and the effectiveness of his grassroots campaign. As Assin North continues to rally behind him, Quayson’s journey remains a symbol of perseverance in Ghanaian politics, underscoring the importance of connecting with constituents and standing firm amidst challenges.
