University Charters Granted: 14 Universities Gain Presidential Approval

In a landmark moment for tertiary education in Ghana, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially granted Presidential Charters to 14 universities, empowering them to award their own degrees. The historic event underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing educational autonomy and fostering excellence in Ghana's academic sector.

The announcement, made during a high-profile ceremony in Accra, marks a turning point for these institutions, previously operating as affiliate colleges of larger universities. The newly chartered universities now join the ranks of Ghana’s independent degree-awarding institutions, poised to shape their academic programs and advance higher education.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of this milestone in building a robust education system. "The granting of these charters is a testament to our collective efforts in raising the standards of tertiary education in Ghana. It’s an opportunity for these universities to take charge of their academic future and deliver programs that meet both national and global demands," he stated.

The recipients of the Presidential Charters include both public and private institutions that have demonstrated compliance with rigorous standards set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). These criteria encompass academic excellence, quality assurance systems, and institutional governance.

Prof. Mohammed Salifu, Director-General of GTEC, commended the chartered universities for their hard work and dedication. “This achievement reflects years of perseverance and adherence to high academic standards. We believe this autonomy will empower them to innovate and expand access to quality education,” he said.

Students and alumni of the newly chartered universities expressed excitement about the development, which they believe will enhance the value of their degrees and elevate the institutions' reputations internationally.

This milestone also aligns with the government’s broader vision to position Ghana as a leading hub for tertiary education in Africa. Stakeholders in the education sector are optimistic that granting charters to more universities will create a competitive academic environment, attract international students, and contribute to national development.

As the 14 universities embark on this new chapter, the challenge remains to maintain high academic standards and produce graduates capable of solving Ghana’s pressing challenges.
