The Ghana Police Service has announced detailed security arrangements and traffic management measures for the January 7 inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama and Vice President-elect Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. To maintain order and ensure safety, a security operational perimeter has been set up around crucial areas, including the Ako Adjei Interchange, AU Roundabout, State House, Accra Sports Stadium, Independence Square, and more. Within this zone, restrictions on vehicular and pedestrian movement will be enforced from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on the day of the ceremony. This is part of a broader effort to provide a secure environment for the high-profile event while minimizing disruptions to surrounding areas.
Several key roads within the perimeter will be closed, such as the 28th February Road between Customs Headquarters and Castle Road Junction, and Lokko Street leading to the AU Roundabout. Diversions have been planned to redirect traffic from affected routes to alternative paths. For instance, vehicles traveling from La, Labone, and Osu to the Central Business District will be rerouted via Salem Avenue and Oxford Street. Similarly, traffic on John Evans Atta Mills High Street heading to Independence Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road. Motorists using Lokko Street or heading towards Castle Road will need to use alternate routes such as Ajumaku and King Hassan Roads. These diversions are designed to minimize congestion while maintaining access to essential destinations.
To accommodate attendees, parking facilities have been designated at the Forecourt of the State House, Efua Sutherland Park, and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture premises. The Police have urged the public to cooperate with security personnel and follow traffic regulations to ensure a smooth and successful event. Residents and visitors within the security perimeter are also advised to plan their movements accordingly to avoid inconvenience. This meticulous planning underscores the importance of public safety and efficient traffic management during significant national events, ensuring both the security of dignitaries and a seamless experience for participants.
