The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has issued a directive prohibiting extravagant Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction, effective from March 5, 2025. This decision follows thorough consultations with Islamic clerics and aims to address the increasing financial burden associated with wedding ceremonies. The Chief Imam expressed concerns that the rising costs of weddings have made it difficult for young people to marry, contradicting the fundamental principles of Islam, which encourage modesty and financial prudence. The directive specifically targets lavish receptions, frequent outfit changes by couples, and elaborate dance sessions, commonly referred to as “jams.” Additionally, the ruling bans male beauticians from dressing women, as this practice is seen as inconsistent with Islamic customs. By taking these steps, the Chief Imam hopes to realign wedding practices with traditional Islamic values and reduce unnecessary expenses that often discourage potential couples from getting married.

A statement from the Office of the Chief Imam emphasized that extravagant wedding celebrations have significantly inflated costs, making marriage less accessible to many young people. The directive seeks to eliminate practices that set unrealistic financial expectations, ensuring that weddings remain simple and reflective of Islamic traditions. The Chief Imam highlighted that adhering to excessive wedding trends often leads to financial strain on couples and their families, which could result in long-term economic difficulties. He encouraged the community to embrace modest wedding ceremonies that prioritize the religious and cultural significance of marriage over materialistic displays. The new regulation aligns with broader efforts within Islamic communities to promote financial discipline and prevent unnecessary expenditures that may create social inequalities among couples.

To ensure effective implementation, the Chief Imam has enlisted the support of various stakeholders, including religious leaders, community elders, and local authorities. Copies of the directive have been distributed to key figures such as the Paramount Chief of Bole (Bolewura), the Bole Municipal Police Commander, and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). Additionally, local media outlets like Nkilgi FM and Yagbon FM have been engaged to help disseminate information and educate the public on the importance of complying with the new guidelines. The Chief Imam urged residents to accept and uphold these changes, emphasizing that they are rooted in Islamic teachings and aimed at fostering a more sustainable and spiritually fulfilling approach to marriage. Through collective commitment and enforcement, the directive seeks to ease the pressure on young people, allowing them to build their marital lives based on faith, love, and financial stability rather than societal pressures and extravagant spending.
