Tensions in Bawku have reached a critical point following what the Minority in Parliament describes as a disturbing new trend—direct confrontations between some youth groups and the security forces. The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, sounded the alarm over the growing hostility during a discussion on Joy News’ PM Express.

He expressed deep concern about the escalating violence, which he said has evolved from long-standing tribal tensions into open resistance against state authorities. According to him, this marks a dangerous shift in the dynamics of the Bawku conflict. Rev Fordjour revealed that there have been multiple incidents indicating a standoff-like posture by some of the feuding youth against police officers deployed to maintain peace.

He described the situation as a fast-deteriorating humanitarian and security crisis, with fear gripping residents and essential services grinding to a halt. Schools remain closed, and health workers are reportedly refusing postings to the area due to safety concerns. The MP emphasized that any attack on law enforcement agents could severely undermine the efforts of national peacekeepers and worsen the chaos.

Fordjour called for total restraint from all sides, stressing that Bawku urgently needs peace. He warned that retaliation only fuels further escalation, urging factions to put aside emotions and refrain from reprisal attacks. He also underscored the need for a depoliticized and united national response, cautioning politicians to avoid using the conflict as a campaign tool or making statements that could aggravate tensions.

He criticized the spread of political narratives that link the intensity of the conflict to which political party holds power, describing such rhetoric as unhelpful and dangerous. Fordjour reiterated that the situation should be handled with utmost neutrality and maturity, insisting that every leader must rise above partisan lines.

Another alarming development he highlighted was the increasing presence of sophisticated weapons in the conflict zone. He noted that the firepower in the hands of some individuals was unsettling and may be one of the reasons behind the confidence to engage security officers. He called for an immediate investigation into how such weaponry is entering the region and urged the government to take decisive action against the source and supply chain.

Despite the volatile situation, the Minority pledged full support for any state-led peace initiative, particularly efforts spearheaded by traditional leaders like the Asantehene. Rev Fordjour concluded by calling on all Ghanaians to rally behind a common cause to restore peace in Bawku and safeguard national security.
