A Ghanaian-born American graduate student, Victor Hayibor, has penned an emotional and powerful letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council, appealing for immediate international intervention in the violent and escalating conflict in Bawku, a border town in Ghana’s Upper East Region. The letter, dated April 15, 2025, highlights the devastating toll the conflict is taking on the lives of innocent civilians, especially women and children, in the town and surrounding areas like Pusiga.

Victor, who is currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology with a focus on Cybersecurity at the University of Massachusetts in the United States, describes the situation in Bawku as “warlike,” with deadly clashes between factions involving high-grade weapons comparable to those used by national security forces. He recounts a chilling experience shared by a trusted friend, a police officer deployed to Bawku, who narrowly escaped death during an attack that claimed the lives of two of his colleagues, with another left critically injured and airlifted for treatment in Accra.

The letter paints a grim picture of a region already grappling with poverty, where many residents survive on less than $5 a day and children’s education is constantly interrupted by violence. Victor’s heartfelt plea urges the United Nations to step in and work alongside Ghana’s government and President John Mahama to restore peace and provide urgent humanitarian assistance.

He expresses cautious optimism about news that the Asantehene, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to mediate the conflict, but emphasises the need for international support to secure a lasting resolution. Victor calls for immediate attention to prevent further bloodshed and warns of the potential long-term impact on the lives and future of the affected communities.

This call to action comes amid growing concerns and reports that the Bawku conflict is being fueled by external factors, including the use of sophisticated arms and allegations of illegal mining proceeds funding violence. The conflict has drawn widespread public attention, with various leaders and experts urging urgent strategic interventions.

Victor’s emotional appeal is not just a personal plea but a voice echoing the desperation of thousands who live under the constant threat of violence. His message is clear—Bawku deserves peace, and the world must not look away. His letter has ignited conversations both locally and internationally, reminding all that silence is not an option when lives are at risk.
