Frederick Opare-Ansah, the Campaign Manager for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during the 2024 presidential election, has firmly dismissed claims that the former Vice President is distancing himself from the records of the previous government. Addressing the growing concerns that Dr Bawumia had attempted to separate himself from the administration's perceived failings, Opare-Ansah provided a passionate defence during an interview on Citi Prime News on Monday, 28th April 2025.
He stated clearly that there has been no instance where Dr Bawumia has denied or walked away from the actions or decisions of the government he once served. “I am yet to hear the former Vice President and our flagbearer speak anywhere and dissociate himself from the actions of the government. He hasn’t done that anywhere,” Opare-Ansah asserted, showing absolute confidence in Bawumia's loyalty to the collective responsibility he once shared.
The campaign manager drew attention to Dr Bawumia’s speeches, highlighting how consistently the pronoun "we" is used when addressing matters of governance and national concerns. This choice of language, he explained, is not accidental but rather a deep and conscious acknowledgement of his part in the leadership journey. Opare-Ansah passionately explained that Bawumia’s rhetoric reflects an honest admission of both the successes and shortcomings of the administration he served.
Opare-Ansah elaborated that Dr Bawumia’s acceptance of responsibility was evident in how he acknowledged the feedback from citizens during their time in office. He mentioned that even when constituents raised critical issues, such as calls for ministerial reshuffling or opposition to the E-levy, Bawumia consistently used collective terms, admitting that as a government, they did not always act upon the people’s wishes. “They said we should reshuffle, but we did not reshuffle. He didn’t say you said Mr A should reshuffle and Mr A didn’t reshuffle. He said you said you don’t like the E-levy, and we did not listen to you. We brought E-levy,” Opare-Ansah recounted.
This defence came at a crucial moment when political narratives were starting to paint Bawumia as someone attempting to craft a new image separate from the past administration. By standing his ground and taking ownership of both the praised and criticised actions of the government, Bawumia is positioning himself as a leader willing to acknowledge mistakes and work towards better governance.
Interestingly, in the midst of this debate, Dr Bawumia himself has previously expressed optimism about the future, stating that history would ultimately vindicate President Akufo-Addo’s leadership. His message points towards a belief that the decisions made during their administration, although controversial at times, were rooted in the greater vision of national development.
In a political environment where many shy away from the errors of the past, Dr Bawumia’s approach, as articulated by his campaign manager, offers an example of leadership grounded in honesty and collective responsibility. His narrative, embracing both the triumphs and criticisms of his time in office, adds a compelling dynamic to Ghana’s political discourse as the nation looks forward to its next chapter.
