Ghanaians In Shock As Ursula Owusu Drops A Bombshell On Bawumia

During a recent New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathering held in her honor, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, former Minister for Communications and the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, delivered a powerful and emotionally charged speech. In her address, she came to the strong defense of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo while indirectly aligning with Kennedy Agyapong’s earlier remarks that criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership approach. Owusu-Ekuful firmly pushed back against the narrative that placed blame for the party’s 2024 electoral defeat squarely on President Akufo-Addo. She praised the President for his tireless commitment to the party over the decades, highlighting his financial contributions to NPP activities and his support for Members of Parliament. She emphasized that Akufo-Addo had been a crucial architect of both the party’s growth and the nation’s democratic progress. “How can we now turn around and demonize someone who’s sacrificed so much for this party?” she questioned, in a tone that echoed Kennedy Agyapong’s longstanding concerns about ingratitude within the party.

Her speech also appeared to validate some of Agyapong’s prior criticisms of Bawumia, particularly around his lack of connection with the party’s base. Owusu-Ekuful pointed out that internal divisions and poor cohesion contributed significantly to voter apathy—issues that Agyapong and other party leaders had warned about in the lead-up to the election. According to political communicator Ernest Owusu-Bempah, over two million NPP voters failed to participate in the 2024 polls—a sign of dissatisfaction within the ranks. As she wrapped up, Owusu-Ekuful urged party members to take a hard look inward and prioritize unity over personal ambitions. She emphasized that loyalty should be recognized and rewarded, and cautioned against allowing factionalism to further tear the party apart. Her message struck a chord with Kennedy Agyapong, who was present at the event and reportedly appreciated her candid tone.

Whether her remarks help bridge the current divisions or deepen them remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Owusu-Ekuful’s comments have added a significant voice to the ongoing debate about the NPP’s direction and leadership heading into the next election cycle. Owusu-Ekuful strongly pushed back against narratives blaming President Akufo-Addo for the party’s loss in the 2024 elections. She lauded the President’s long-standing sacrifices for the NPP, including his financial support of party operations and MPs, and his pivotal role in shaping the country’s democratic and economic landscape. “After all he has done, how can we now vilify him?” she asked, in a tone echoing Agyapong’s long-standing frustrations with perceived ingratitude within the party.

Her remarks also resonated with past criticisms from Agyapong, who warned that Bawumia lacked a strong connection with the party’s grassroots. Owusu-Ekuful’s reflection on the party’s disunity seemed to acknowledge that these internal rifts played a key role in dampening voter turnout—a problem Kennedy Agyapong and other party insiders had warned about well before the election. Reports from Ernest Owusu-Bempah claim that over two million NPP supporters stayed home in 2024.
