National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, has called on Ghanaians to patiently accept the introduction of the 1.75% levy on electronic transactions.
Speaking at a meeting with personnel of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the National Security Minister said there is the need for the citizenry to accept the levy to help the government generate funds for national development.
According to him, acceptance of the tax will be a sacrifice made by the masses to enable government to earn revenues to deliver on its commitment to the people of Ghana.
He added that the ability of government to provide development and enhance the welfare of the people relies on the availability of revenues.
“Here in Ghana, the E-levy idea continues to divide opinions yet, these are but a few of the sacrifices that the citizenry must, in my opinion, be ready to make to support the government’s activity towards reviving the economy and providing much-needed public goods and public services,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Mobile Money Agents Association has threatened to embark on an industrial strike come January 12, 2022, or January 18 when Parliament has resumed sittings.
The MoMo agents said the e-levy is not a commendable money-making avenue looking at its negative implications on their MoMo business.
The group said the levy will collapse their business.
However, Kan Dapaah said Ghanaians should accept the levy like one of their already-made sacrifices to help the government revamp the economy.
