Former President John Mahama has accused the government of misleading Ghanaians about the source of the country's present economic predicament.

He called the government's claim that Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine situation are to blame for the current economic crisis a "bloody lie."

"The war in Ukraine could not have occurred at a worse time for the world economy," Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta said at a press conference in Accra last Thursday.

Mr. Ofori-Atta emphasized the economic destruction caused by the Coronavirus outbreak in Ghana.

However, during a weekend meeting with the NDC USA Chapter Executives in Boston, the 2020 NDC Presidential Candidate claimed that the Akufo-Addo administration's budget has always had 'holes' in it. "I've accused the Finance Minister of conducting creative accounting on multiple occasions because there are large liability amounts that he would never include in the budget. When you add them to the budget, he says he has a 4.5 percent deficit, but when you add them to the budget, you find out he is close to a 7.58 percent budget deficit. So there's always been a budget shortfall, and if they tell you it's because of Covid and Ukraine that we're in this mess, it's a horrible lie," John Mahama remarked.

He went on to say that the 'hole' in the budget is filled by the cost of the banking sector clean-up and the energy sector responsibility.

"You can do all the propaganda you want with the fundamentals, but you know Covid will expose you," he continued.

When the New Patriotic Party made a mockery of the NDC in 2020 by suggesting that the Free SHS be reviewed if the party had won power, John Mahama chastised the administration for its choice to evaluate some of its signature programs.

"I said that within 90 days of taking office, I will call a stakeholders meeting and invite everyone who is a stakeholder in the education sector to review the Free SHS so that we can make it more efficient, cut out the waste, and all that, and of course, I will call a stakeholders meeting and invite everyone who is a stakeholder in the education sector to review the Free SHS so that we can make it more efficient, cut out the waste, and all that, and of course, I will call a stakeholders
