GHANA'S PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE IS ON THE VERGE OF BECOMING A PUBLIC RISK - INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERS

If proper attention is not paid to sustainable engineering and maintenance techniques, Ghana's public infrastructure is on the verge of becoming a public risk.

It comes after the country received a D3 in the Ghana Institution of Engineering's latest Ghana Infrastructure Report Card (GhIE).

Engineer Magnus Quarshie, Chairman of the Research Committee, who launched the 2022/2023 Score Card, predicted a gloomy future of poverty if the excellent infrastructure is not implemented.

He added that the 'Panama Canal' was created 108 years ago and has remained relevant and useful during that time.

While it needed leadership to achieve this, he believes that sustainable engineering cannot be ruled out.  "Building for Ever, Building to Last" is the topic of the 2022/23 Infrastructure Report Score Card.

The quality and quantity of every country's infrastructure are directly related to the quality and quantity of their access to engineering training and experts, according to Ing. Magnus, a Past President of the GhIE (2014).

He came to the conclusion that the infrastructure of a country's quality, relevance, efficiency, and sustainability are fundamental drivers of any developed economy.

In his welcome address, the Executive Director Ing. David Nyante expressed the institution's joy at the launch of the 2022/23 Ghana Infrastructure Report Score Card, saying that a country that does not inventory its key infrastructure is impoverished, with unemployment, lack of development, and a shortage of basic social amenities.

As a result, he appealed to development partners to join him in making the infrastructure assessment a biennial event.

He noted that the latest infrastructure report card for Energy, Transportation, and Water infrastructure was completed in 2016. These infrastructures were classified as D3, which means they were in bad condition and required extensive improvement.

Dr. Michael Ankamah Bekoe, the committee's Co-chair and Coordinator, outlined the key infrastructure that will be audited for this year's Infrastructure Report Score Card, which will include water and sanitation, education (primary and secondary), health (hospitals, clinics, and CHPS), transportation (roads, bridges, and airports), and telecommunication.

The President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing. Rev. Prof. Charles Anum Adams, who officially launched the 2022/23 Ghana Infrastructure Report Score Card, emphasized that no country can develop if it does not regularly audit and maintain its key infrastructure as the population and resettlement of people grows. Infrastructure that is of high quality has the potential to eradicate poverty.

As a result, he requested assistance from development partners.

He finished by saying that the Ghana Institution of Engineering is proud and ready to contribute to a structured national conversation on infrastructure and to engage the people in a lot more easy way to comprehend the quality of our infrastructure.

Ing. Magnus Lincoln Quashie, Chairman, Ing Dr. Michael Ankamah Bekoe, Co-Chair/Coordinator, Ing Adjei Boateng, Member, Ing Samuel Boamah, Member, Ing Samuel Asare, Member, and Ing Asante Antwi Fiifi, Member, make up the 6-member committee charged with conducting this audit for the 2022/23 Ghana Infrastructure Report Score Card.
