Dr. Ishmeal Yamson, the Board Chairman of Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) Ghana, has lent his support to the demand for state sponsorship of political parties.

Last Wednesday, he warned that the way political parties and campaigns are now funded might result in "dirty money" gaining control of our politics. He was speaking at a public lecture at the Central University of Ghana in Accra.

He asserted that a similar circumstance may result in a small group of people seizing power, just like the SAFT takeover did in South Africa.

He said, "The folks with filthy money would takeover our government and country if dirty money is genuinely financing politics in Ghana."

"Leadership for the Future: Insights from a 55-year career in corporate Africa" was the topic of the speech. Dr. Yamson's statement comes in response to multiple requests for state sponsorship of political parties made by countless people, civil society organizations, and well-known figures.

In order to strengthen the nation's democracy, former president John Dramani Mahama has urged for changes to the way political parties are funded.

He said that the reforms would make sure that some components would not unfairly benefit from the nation's governing structure.

He added that the country's dependence on a small group of people who fund political campaigns in exchange for favors is a formula for corruption and that ethical political fundraising has been one aspect of the country's democratic path that has continued to evade reform.

State sponsorship of political parties, according to Mr. Senyo Hosi, a finance and economic policy analyst, would limit the financing of political parties by people and interest groups that have fostered a culture of favoritism and corruption in the nation's government structure.

Leadership

Speaking about leadership in the nation, Dr. Yamson, who is also the Chairman of Unilever Ghana Limited, noted that one of the main reasons for the country's economic crisis was the failure of the leadership to comprehend the major global trends that are dramatically changing the world and their associated risks.

He said that the government's claims about the nation's economic "mess" being unaffected by the epidemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine were untrue.

"The many years of political instability and the resulting breakdown of good governance, loss of fundamental democratic principles, disregard for the rule of law, and destruction of our cultural values and behaviours, which had shaped our governance arrangements even at our traditional levels, along with pervasive greed and corruption, have succeeded in accumulating very destructive values and behaviours which have consistently undermined attempts to develop a prosperous society,"

According to Dr. Yamson, the nation did not have and does not have leaders who can foresee the future, adapt, and respond by altering the governance architecture and operating model and implementing the necessary resilient strategies to support the economy, develop it, and generate employment and riches.
