Prophet Salifu Amoako Appeals to Court to Protect His Son’s Privacy Amid East Legon Accident Case

In a developing legal case stemming from a tragic accident in East Legon, Ghana, Prophet Elisha Salifu Amoako has appeared in court again, accompanied by his wife and personal assistant, Linda Owusu-Bempah. Amoako faces charges alongside the others for allowing his 16-year-old son, Elrad Salifu Amoako, to drive without a license—a decision that led to a fatal crash on October 12, 2024. The accident resulted in the deaths of two young women, Maame Dwomoh Boaten and Justine Agbenu.

In court on October 30, 2024, Amoako presented a request to halt the circulation of his son's images in media outlets. The prominent televangelist appealed to both the court and the press, arguing that the continued exposure of his son, a minor, is unwarranted given his age and mental health status. Media coverage of the incident has been extensive, and Salifu Amoako emphasized that while he does not seek to absolve his son from facing legal scrutiny, he hopes to reduce public attention on the young driver, who has already suffered both physically and emotionally since the accident.

Amid the proceedings, the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) reported that Elrad Salifu Amoako was recently declared medically unfit for questioning. The hospital's orthopedic and trauma team, led by Dr. Fred Salawu, released an official report detailing Elrad's condition following skin graft surgery for injuries sustained in the accident. He is currently unable to walk unaided due to a serious leg wound. Given these medical concerns, UGMC has recommended a pause on any interrogation of the teen to allow for his recovery.

The tragic case has ignited heated discussions online. Some critics argue that the young man should face the full extent of the law, while others debate the influence of his father’s public standing on the legal process. Meanwhile, Salifu Amoako has publicly insisted that the crash was an unfortunate accident, urging a more compassionate public response. He contends that while accountability is necessary, the teenage driver deserves protection from undue public exposure as he navigates the legal repercussions of the incident.

The families of the victims continue to call for justice, expressing their grief and loss while demanding that the incident's severity be appropriately addressed. Both families believe that leniency could set a concerning precedent for similar cases involving influential families.

This case remains ongoing, with subsequent court dates set to address the legal and ethical complexities it presents. The incident has also brought broader public focus on road safety and parental responsibility, especially concerning minors’ involvement in high-risk activities. As the trial unfolds, many will watch closely to see how the legal system navigates the balance between justice and protection of juvenile rights.
