Karaga, a district in the Northern Region of Ghana, has been declared the country's first digital city after an unprecedented project offering Wi-Fi to all its residents was launched. This was announced by Dr. Amin Adams, Deputy Minister of Finance for Ghana, at a launch in the township. The project forms part of the government's initiative to digitize the country and narrow the technological gap between urban and rural areas.
In his address, Dr. Amin Adams emphasized that the digital city project will play an important role in the socioeconomic development of Karaga and its surrounding areas. "This is a monumental step for Karaga, and indeed, for Ghana. We are connecting our citizens with free internet to power modern digital services into education, health, and the local economy," he said.
The free Wi-Fi service will be installed in strategic public areas across Karaga, including marketplaces, health centers, schools, and government offices, which enable residents to use high-speed internet for purposes that best suit them, be it online learning and healthcare consultation or expanding business opportunities and fostering communication.
According to Dr. Amin Adams, this forms part of the government's commitment to ensure inclusiveness in the country's digital policy so that no community, particularly the rural ones, will be left behind in the current digital era. "This initiative is part of our long-term vision to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of their location, has access to the tools and opportunities that the digital world offers," he said.
Local leaders and residents alike sounded their excitement for the new development, which means livelihoods will be improved and new doors opened for entrepreneurship, education, and healthcare. The development is seen as a critical step toward the challenges of connectivity that have otherwise plagued rural communities in Ghana for a long period.
The Karaga transformation into a smart city should serve as an example for other rural areas, the government having plans to extend the same initiatives to more towns in the country. This means that the free Wi-Fi initiative has become a major milestone in the government's continued push towards the course of digital equity and inclusive growth.
