Combating Domestic Violence in the Eastern Region Through Education and Support Services

Efforts to address domestic violence in the Eastern Region have underscored the critical role of education and support services in promoting healthier relationships for women and families. Stakeholders, including government bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community leaders, have been actively working to raise awareness and provide essential support systems to combat this pervasive issue.

Recent initiatives in the Eastern Region have focused on educating communities about the signs of domestic violence and the resources available to victims. Campaigns in various towns and villages have highlighted the importance of breaking the silence around abuse and ensuring that victims know they are not alone. Workshops and seminars have been organized to teach women their rights and empower them to seek help when needed.

Support services such as counseling, shelters, and legal assistance have also been reinforced to offer a safety net for victims. The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in the region has reported increased collaboration with local NGOs, resulting in more victims receiving timely assistance. Additionally, community outreach programs are working to change societal attitudes and encourage men to become advocates against domestic violence.

During a recent awareness event, several survivors shared their stories, stressing the importance of education in helping them recognize abuse and empowering them to leave harmful situations. One speaker noted, “Education helped me understand that violence is not love. Knowing my rights gave me the courage to start a new life.”

Local authorities have also emphasized the need for early education in schools to teach young people about respect, consent, and healthy relationships. By reaching children early, educators hope to prevent future instances of domestic violence.

While progress is being made, challenges remain. Many victims still hesitate to report abuse due to fear, stigma, or lack of resources. As a result, continued investment in education, support services, and community dialogue is essential to make lasting change.
