Deputy IGP COP Tetteh Yohuno drags Captain Smart, Media General to court over false publication.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Tetteh Yohuno, has filed a defamation lawsuit against journalist Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited.

The suit, filed at the High Court of Justice in Accra, relates to alleged defamatory statements made by Captain Smart on the *Onua Maakye* program, broadcast on Onua FM and Onua TV. According to the plaintiff, these statements were made during the December 27, 2024, broadcast and further disseminated on Media General's platforms, including social media.

The claims state that Captain Smart accused COP Yohuno of engaging in political maneuvering and unlawful activities aimed at destabilizing Ghana's political framework. Additionally, Captain Smart allegedly claimed that COP Yohuno sought political appointments through meetings, gained promotion through bribery and political influence, and paid dues to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) despite holding a New Patriotic Party (NPP) membership card.

The plaintiff contends that Captain Smart falsely alleged that COP Yohuno engaged in corrupt practices to secure his promotion within the Ghana Police Service and implied he used money to influence his appointment to the IGP position.

COP Yohuno's lawsuit seeks several remedies, including:

1. A public retraction and an unqualified apology.

2. The publication of apologies on Onua TV, Onua FM, and three additional radio platforms.

3. General and aggravated damages for defamation.

4. An injunction to prevent further defamatory remarks.

The statement of claim asserts that the false and malicious allegations have severely damaged COP Yohuno's personal and professional reputation. He noted that since the publication of these statements, he has received numerous concerned calls and messages from colleagues, relatives, and associates.

“These false publications have brought my hard-earned reputation as a consummate professional policeman into ridicule and contempt,” COP Yohuno stated, emphasizing the harm caused to his public image.
