Statue Of Former President Repaired Few Days After Damage

The statue of Ghana’s late former President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, at Asomdwee Park has been restored following the vandalism of its plaque. Asomdwee Park, the final resting place of the former president, is a site dedicated to honoring Ghana’s past leaders.

The original plaque, which was damaged, bore the inscription: “This was unveiled by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, and assisted by Samuel Koku Anyidoho, Founder and CEO of the Atta-Mills Institute.” The replacement plaque now reads: “Here lie the mortal remains of Professor John Evans Atta Mills, 21 July 1944 - 24 July 2013, President of the Republic of Ghana, 07 January 2009 - 24 July 2012.”

Samuel Koku Anyidoho, who serves as the CEO of the Atta-Mills Institute and is a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), took to social media to announce the repair of the plaque. He shared images comparing the original and new plaques, noting in his caption: “The original writing and the new one. The heavens have already declared the glory of God.”

On January 8, 2025, Anyidoho expressed his frustration over the vandalism through another social media post. He shared photos of the broken plaque, which had previously acknowledged his involvement in the unveiling ceremony. Despite the damage to the plaque, the statue of Professor Mills remained intact.

The individuals responsible for the vandalism have yet to be identified. Asomdwee Park, a state-owned property, holds significant national importance as a site commemorating Ghana’s former presidents. The park has served as a place of reflection and remembrance for many Ghanaians.

Despite the distress caused by the vandalism, Koku Anyidoho remained steadfast in his faith and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor Professor Mills. He shared words of comfort and positivity, writing: “My Bible tells me that 'In All Things,' I should give thanks to God. I am also singing… ‘It is well with my soul.’ To God be all the glory, and my prayer is for God to continue blessing my beloved Homeland Ghana.”

This incident highlights both the enduring respect for Professor Mills’ legacy and the challenges of preserving national monuments. The restoration of the plaque underscores the commitment to ensuring that his memory remains honored and intact.
