President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that “no soldiers from the US would be necessary” in his proposal for Gaza, a few days after suggesting that the United States could “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip.
“No soldiers from the US would be needed! Stability for the region would reign!!!” Trump wrote in an early morning post on his Truth Social platform.
Earlier in the week, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was visiting, Trump proposed that “the US will take over the Gaza Strip.”
“We will handle it, and we’ll own it,” Trump said during a press conference, causing audible gasps while providing little explanation on how the US would manage to remove over two million Palestinians or govern the war-torn region.
However, his administration seemed to backtrack on this idea by Wednesday following criticism from Palestinians, Arab governments, and international leaders.
Trump's Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, clarified that the statement “was not meant to be hostile,” while the White House reiterated that there was no commitment to sending US troops.
In his Thursday post, Trump elaborated that “the Gaza Strip would be turned over to the United States by Israel after the fighting.” He also claimed that Palestinians “would have already been resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities, with new, modern homes, in the region.”
Meanwhile: India's foreign minister warned on Thursday of a "strong crackdown" on illegal migration, following a US military plane's repatriation of 104 migrants as part of President Donald Trump's immigration reforms.
Since Trump's inauguration on January 20, thousands of undocumented migrants have been detained across the United States.
Trump's series of executive actions targeting immigration are estimated to affect 11 million undocumented individuals.
“It is the responsibility of every country to repatriate its nationals found living illegally abroad,” Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told parliament.
Michael W. Banks, Chief of the US Border Patrol, described the repatriation flight of “illegal aliens to India” as the “farthest deportation flight yet using military transport.” Read more here.
