He participated in France 1998 and in Europe he also played for Sampdoria, Lecce and Modena.
Former Colombian soccer player Jorge Bolaño , who participated in the 1998 World Cup in France , died this Sunday at the age of 47 in the city of Cúcuta, local media confirmed.
Bolaño , idol of Junior de Barranquilla and remembered in Italy for his seasons with Parma , died of a heart attack during a party he was attending in Cúcuta , capital of the department of Norte de Santander and city that has the main border crossing between Colombia and Venezuela, according to the Bogota newspaper El Tiempo.
"With deep sorrow, we express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Jorge Eladio Bolaño Correa , former Colombian Men's National Team player, professional soccer player, and coach, who passed away this Sunday," the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) said in a statement.
The organization added that " Jorge Bolaño 's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and admired him" and stated that "his legacy as a footballer and coach will live on in the memory of Colombian sport."
During his career, Bolaño, born on April 28, 1977 in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta , played as a midfielder and is remembered for his time at Junior, the club he played for between 1993 and 1999.
In the Barranquilla team, the former footballer, who was the son of the late former player Óscar Bolaño , played 161 matches in which he scored 10 goals and won the Colombian league titles in 1993 and 1995, the golden era of that club.
His strong performance at Junior opened the door for him to join the Colombian national team, where he made his debut in a friendly in 1995 and participated in the 1998 World Cup in France.
He also played in the 1999 Copa América, where he scored a goal against Chile in the quarterfinals, and participated in the South American qualifiers for the 1998, 2002, and 2006 World Cups.
In 1999, Bolaño was signed by Parma, a team with which he won the Coppa Italia in 2002.
He also played for Italian clubs Sampdoria, Lecce and Modena, where he completed his European career in 2009.
In 2010, he returned to Colombia to play for Cúcuta Deportivo, a club from which he retired in 2012 to remain involved in the world of football.
Bolaño served as technical assistant to Willy Rodríguez at the now-defunct Uniautónoma of Colombia in 2014 and to Juan Carlos Ramírez for his country's U-17 national team between 2022 and 2024.
He also coached Real Frontera , in the Venezuelan second division, in 2017 and worked as a sports commentator on local television channels.
