National Security operatives have reportedly seized several vehicles belonging to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, due to his failure to repay a loan obtained from the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC). The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been at the center of numerous financial controversies, and this latest action adds to his mounting legal troubles.
Sources indicate that Chairman Wontumi secured a substantial loan from MASLOC—an institution established to support small and medium-sized businesses in Ghana. However, his failure to fulfill repayment obligations triggered the intervention of National Security, resulting in the impoundment of some of his vehicles, allegedly as part of debt recovery efforts.
This incident has sparked intense public discourse. While some political observers question whether the enforcement was politically motivated, others argue it is part of MASLOC’s broader crackdown on defaulters. In recent times, MASLOC has been accused of mismanagement and political bias, with critics alleging that loans are often granted based on political affiliations rather than proper financial assessments.
Supporters of Chairman Wontumi have voiced their displeasure, insisting the government should have explored less confrontational avenues before resorting to seizing personal assets. They maintain that Wontumi’s political influence in the Ashanti Region is significant and suggest the move may be intended to tarnish his image.
Meanwhile, Wontumi has yet to issue an official response. However, sources close to him reveal that his legal team is preparing to challenge the seizure in court, claiming that due process was not followed during the debt recovery operation.
Legal analysts say that if the debt remains unpaid, further actions such as court-ordered asset seizures may follow. The development also renews scrutiny on MASLOC’s loan disbursement and recovery practices, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability.
As the issue unfolds, many Ghanaians are watching closely to see how it will impact both Chairman Wontumi’s political career and the credibility of MASLOC’s financial operations.
