Nana Obiri Boahen, Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has chastised individuals who have spoken out against Togbe Afede XIV, who has returned the state's Ex-gratia.
According to him, the country's lack of development is due to the overpoliticization of issues.
After releasing a statement indicating and explaining that he has returned a sum of GHC365,392.67 as ex-gratia for his service as a Council of State member from 2017 to 2020, the Paramount Chief and the Agbogbomefia of Asogli has been the talk of the town.
Following this, both conventional and social media platforms saw a flood of praise and condemnation.
Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, according to Ghanaian broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere, has more money to return to the state than the GHC365,000 ex-gratia he just returned.
He claims that in four years, the respected leader barely attended 16 percent of Council of State sessions.
According to Paul Adom-Otchere, out of 242 sessions held by the Council in 48 months, the former member attended just 39, or 16 percent; yet, despite his inability to attend the bulk of the meetings, he "received all of his pay and other perks."
However, Nana Obiri Boahen, speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' show, said that those denouncing Togbe Afede's move have chosen to see the situation through political glasses rather than approaching it from a fair and objective standpoint.
"What's the matter with that, what's the matter with that... what crime has Togbe Afede committed?" Nana Obiri Boahene posed a rhetorical question.
"Let's quit playing infantile politics... what they're saying about Togbe Afede isn't fair," he continued.
Togbe Afede, he claimed, is resourceful, and as such, he might choose to renounce any funds he is handed. "In my opinion, Togbe Afede's choice to return state funds is admirable, and Ghanaians should thank him for his generous act."
"In terms of electricity, Togbe Afede has aided Agyekum Kufour, Atta Mills, Mahama, and the nation." Even if he claims to be a member of the NDC, there is nothing wrong with him since he is a human being; similarly, if Obiri Boahen claims to be a member of the NPP, there is nothing wrong with him. He said, "Let us give credit where credit is due."
When participating to conversations or debates on crucial national issues, he urged Ghanaians to go beyond party politics and consider the country's overall well-being and progress.
