A new, updated affordable housing initiative is in the works that will assist State Housing Company Limited (SHC) and private sector developers in building homes at lower costs.
Under the new plan, the government would provide serviced sites to private developers so they could erect horizontal structures, which would reduce construction costs by up to 40%.
According to Francis Asenso-Boakye, Minister of Works and Housing, the updated plan would let developers "build and sell" inexpensive homes to around 60% of public sector employees who required livable housing for themselves and their families.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye also stated that the revised plan would be implemented in Pokuase in the Greater Accra Region and Dedeso in the Ashanti Region, where the President would soon cut the sod after the projects had gone through the required legal procedures, during the inauguration of 16-unit apartment blocks in Adentan, Accra, yesterday.
With that, he expressed great optimism that many Ghanaians, particularly those employed in the public sector like teachers, nurses, police officers, civil officials, bankers, and other employees, will be able to locate suitable housing for their families.

The "Seasons Courts" flats, located at Adentan Housing Down, are two- and three-bedroom self-contained homes designed to house 16 families.
The two blocks were built by the SHC and named for two long-tenured employees of the firm, Samuel Osei and Alfred Odoom Fynn, who both worked there for more than 30 years.

a success tale
According to Mr. Asenso-Boakye, he has always wished to be connected with the SHC's success story, which shows how important leadership is to any organization's achievement.
He said that the SHC, a developer from a non-performing institution, was now vying with other developers from the private sector to generate revenue for the government.
In light of this, it's crucial to remember that they are offering inexpensive homes at a significant discount from the going market rate.
"Even though they are providing affordable houses quite below the prevailing market prices, it is still not within the range that the government is expecting from them," the man stated.
He said that the government understood that it would need to play a part in order to be able to offer the sort of inexpensive housing that Ghanaians required.
According to statistics that are currently available, 60% of Ghanaians can only acquire housing with government assistance, and 35% of Ghanaians will still find it challenging to access housing even with government assistance.
"This means that just 5% of the population can access homes on their own.
