The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) of Ghana has destroyed over 150,000 kilograms of illicit drugs, which were seized between 2021 and 2024. This large-scale operation, conducted at the Bundase Military Camp in the Ningo-Prampram District, marked a significant step in the nation’s fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse. The stockpile included a wide array of illegal substances, such as cannabis, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, and codeine. Each type of drug was meticulously disposed of to prevent its potential harm to communities across the country.

NACOC’s Director-General, Dr. Kenneth Adu-Amanfoh, emphasized the importance of this destruction effort. “Each kilogram of these illicit substances represents lives potentially destroyed, families disrupted, and communities destabilized,” he said. By eradicating this cache, the Commission aims to send a strong message to drug traffickers and criminal networks that there is no tolerance for their activities in Ghana.

Dr. Adu-Amanfoh highlighted that while enforcement is a critical component of combating drug issues, it alone is insufficient. NACOC is committed to a more holistic approach that includes education, prevention, and rehabilitation. According to Adu-Amanfoh, these initiatives are essential for addressing the root causes of drug addiction and reducing demand, ultimately supporting healthier communities.

NACOC has made strides in breaking down drug trafficking networks, disrupting supply chains, and reinforcing community safety through consistent, focused efforts. The Director-General also noted the support of the NACOC Governing Board, which has been instrumental in bolstering international and regional cooperation. Such partnerships enhance enforcement capabilities, broaden intelligence networks, and reinforce Ghana’s national policies against illicit drugs.

Looking ahead, NACOC is dedicated to working alongside its international, regional, and local partners to tackle the complex issue of drug trafficking. Dr. Adu-Amanfoh pledged continued efforts to protect Ghana’s borders and communities, stressing that the collaboration with these allies is vital to sustaining the fight against narcotics.

This recent destruction of seized drugs stands as a testament to NACOC’s determination to combat drug trafficking and protect public safety. With a balanced strategy of enforcement, education, and prevention, NACOC remains focused on building a safer, drug-free society for Ghana.
