Jean Mensa Summoned to Parliament Over Delay in Ablekuma North Election Results

Ghana’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, has been summoned by Parliament to appear next week in connection with the protracted delay in concluding the parliamentary results for Ablekuma North, a matter that has sparked national concern.

The EC has come under increasing scrutiny for failing to complete the recollation of the 2024 parliamentary results in the constituency. This delay has left the seat unconfirmed months after elections ended, raising eyebrows among political observers and ordinary citizens alike. Pressure has mounted from political parties, civil society organizations, and voters, all calling on the EC to finalize the process and bring certainty to the matter.

Public trust has been shaken by the Commission’s inaction, with many questioning the transparency and efficiency of Ghana’s electoral system. The continued silence and lack of resolution have fueled doubts about the EC’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring credible outcomes.

In response to the mounting frustration, the Minority Caucus recently submitted a formal request to the Ghana Police Service, asking that officers be deployed to protect EC personnel while they undertake the remaining tasks related to the vote recount. The opposition group stressed that safety concerns might be deterring the Commission from completing its duties.

The issue was again spotlighted in Parliament on Friday, June 13, when the weekly Business Statement was presented. Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga informed MPs that the EC Chair would be required to attend a session of the Committee of the Whole, where she would answer two specific questions regarding the unresolved situation in Ablekuma North.

“In the coming week, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission will appear before the Committee of the Whole to respond to two questions,” Ayariga told lawmakers during the sitting.

This appearance is being viewed as part of Parliament’s constitutional role in ensuring that public institutions operate with openness and are held accountable for their actions—or inactions. Members of the House are expected to press Mensa for explanations on the delays and seek assurances on when the final results will be completed and announced.

Meanwhile, Ayariga also announced that the ministers in charge of the Interior, as well as Works, Housing, and Water Resources, are scheduled to brief Parliament on Wednesday, June 18. Their session will focus on the widespread flooding that has hit various parts of the country, leading to displacement and infrastructure damage. Lawmakers will expect to hear about both emergency responses and long-term flood prevention strategies.

As next week approaches, the spotlight will remain fixed on Parliament and the Electoral Commission. With rising demand for accountability and swift action, many Ghanaians are hopeful that the upcoming sessions will deliver the answers they’ve been waiting for—and, crucially, set a precedent for stronger democratic gov

ernance going forward.
