With Ghana’s 2024 general elections just around the corner, celebrated dancehall artist Stonebwoy has disclosed that he has received an invitation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to perform at one of their campaign events. Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the award-winning musician shared his thoughts on the offer and the considerations influencing his decision.
Stonebwoy, whose real name is Livingstone Etse Satekla, emphasized that while the call has been made, no concrete discussions have taken place with the NDC directly. For him, the financial aspect of the offer will be a significant determinant in accepting the gig.
“There are a few [offers] that I’m considering. I think there’s one call from the NDC now. To be clear, I haven’t spoken to any NDC person, though there has been a call from them,” he clarified. “We’re checking on the money level, and if it goes well, I’ll perform for my fans so I can use some of the money for the BHIM Festival.”
Stonebwoy’s BHIM Festival, an annual event celebrating his music and connecting with his fans, has grown in popularity over the years, making it a significant part of his calendar.
Despite the political nature of the event in question, Stonebwoy was quick to point out that his involvement would be rooted in promoting peace, irrespective of the party involved. He underscored his neutrality and commitment to Ghana's unity.
“December is coming, so peaceful elections is all we seek,” he said passionately. “When you see me on any platform, I’m performing for peace. Whether NPP, NDC, CPP—it’s for peace because we are all one Ghana. Ghana first. Ghana must win in the end.”
His call for peace during the upcoming elections aligns with a broader national sentiment as Ghanaians prepare for a pivotal vote on December 7. Stonebwoy’s stance reflects his role as not just an entertainer but also a public figure mindful of his influence on his fans and the general populace.
Over the years, the intersection of entertainment and politics in Ghana has sparked varying reactions, with many questioning the neutrality of artists who choose to perform at political events. Stonebwoy, however, seems to rise above this by prioritizing his message of unity and peace.
The NDC’s outreach to Stonebwoy is part of a broader strategy by political parties to engage prominent figures in Ghana’s vibrant music industry to rally support. This approach underscores the powerful role music plays in shaping narratives and galvanizing people during elections.
Meanwhile, Stonebwoy’s fans and political observers alike are waiting to see whether he will ultimately take up the NDC’s offer. His decision could set the tone for other entertainers who might be approached by political parties in the lead-up to the polls.
As the 2024 elections approach, public figures like Stonebwoy are calling on Ghanaians to focus on the bigger picture: a peaceful, free, and fair election. His concluding words during the interview were a powerful reminder of what truly matters during this crucial period.
“Ghana must win,” he reiterated. “That’s what we all want in the end.”
